What is typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening bacterial infection of the intestine and surrounding lymph nodes, including the spleen.  In severe cases the infection can spread to the lungs, brain and kidneys.  Typhoid fever is caught by eating food that has been contaminated with the Salmonella typhi bacteria.  Contamination occurs when faeces or urine of an infected person, or symptom-free carrier, containing the Salmonella typhi bacteria comes in contact with food or drinking water. Typhoid fever is still common in the developing world, where it affects about 12.5 million persons each year.

It takes between 5 to 14 days from the time the bacteria are first swallowed to the development of symptoms.  The illness causes sustained high fever and chills, headache, sore throat and cough, tiredness, abdominal pain, relative bradycardia (slow heart rate) and constipation.  After a day or two the constipation gives way to severe diarrhoea.  With no treatment the patient that survives the severe dehydration and anorexia that accompanies the diarrhoea will slowly improve after about ten days.   However, relapses may occur during the first two to three weeks after the first attack.  Complications include severe bleeding and perforation of the intestine.  This is the main cause of death in serious typhoid cases.  Death may occur in up to 30% of untreated cases, but only in 2% of cases treated in good facilities.  The bacteria can be detected by blood, urine or faeces tests.

Conventional Treatments.

Treatment normally involves the use of antibiotics to kill the bacteria, steroids to reduce inflammation, intravenous fluids and a low residue diet.  Antibiotics usually begin to produce results in 2 to 3 days.  However, patients who do not receive treatment may experience symptoms for weeks or even months.  In cases where the patient becomes a non-symptom carrier conventional antibiotics have very little chance of completely eliminating the typhoid bacteria from the liver and other organs.  Non-symptom carriers can still be identified by the usual tests because the bacteria are always present in their blood.  These people can infect others.

Homoeopathic treatment - Indications & Mode of Action:

TYPO200 is a very effective homoeopathic treatment for typhoid.  It acts simultaneously on the liver, stomach and immune system.  It causes the production of acids in the liver and stomach that kill the typhoid bacteria and expel them into the bowel.  It also acts as a powerful allergen causing the patient’s immune system to produce large amounts of typhoid-specific antibodies, which then attack the bacteria in the blood stream and the other organs.   This integrated approach to stimulating all of the body’s defence mechanisms results in a rapid cure for typhoid, especially in highly acute cases.  TYPO200 will also successfully cure longer term chronic and non-symptom carriers; usually within 4 weeks.  These cases require a longer treatment period to eliminate the typhoid bacteria because it has had time to become firmly established in the liver.

Dosage &  Administration.

Chronic cases

The dosage that should be given to a chronic typhoid patient or symptom-free carrier who is not yet acute is as follows:

q       STAGE 1.  Give one spray of TYPO200 under the tongue every 30 minutes until an immune reaction occurs.  This reaction is usually felt as a mild headache, nausea, minor abdominal discomfort, sudden increase in fever or even a cold sweat.  The patient must be aware, and ready to acknowledge these minor physiological changes when they occur.  When the reaction begins the medicine must be sprayed under the tongue every five minutes until the reaction stops; that is, until the patient no longer feels the symptoms mentioned above.  This reaction usually lasts between thirty minutes to one hour and will not endanger the patient.  The reaction is a sign that typhoid bacteria are being expelled from the liver in large amounts and are being attacked by the patient’s immune system.

q       STAGE 2.  Give one spray of TYPO200 under the tongue every morning and night for the next four weeks (until the bottle is finished).  If during this four-week period the reaction mentioned above occurs again, then the five-minute dosage mentioned in STAGE 1 should be used again until the reaction stops and the symptoms disappear.

NOTE: Duration and monitoring of treatment for chronic cases

The treatment described above for chronic cases should successfully eliminate all typhoid bacteria from the patient’s liver and other organs within four weeks.  The patient’s progress can easily be monitored by weekly blood tests to determine the volume of bacteria still in the blood.

It should be noted that within the first week of treatment the volume of typhoid bacteria detectable in the blood will increase significantly as the medicine’s action expels the bacteria from the liver.   The amount of bacteria will gradually decrease until the patient is cured (typhoid test result - negative).

Acute cases

The dosage that should be given to an acute typhoid patient (i.e. suffering from high fevers and

chills,  severe diarrhea, dehydration and rapid weight loss is as follows:

q       STAGE 1.  Give one spray of TYPO200 under the tongue every 30 minutes for the first six hours.  This dosage must be continued even if the patient is asleep.  If the medicine is sprayed on top of the tongue while the patient is asleep this will suffice.

q       STAGE 2.  For the next 12 hours give one spray under the tongue every hour.

q       STAGE 3.  After the 12-hour dosage in STAGE 2, the medicine should be sprayed under the tongue morning and night until the bottle is finished to ensure that no residual bacteria are left in the patient’s liver.  In most acute cases typhoid bacteria will no longer be detected after three days.

Daily Prophylaxis:

Take one spray of Typo200 under the tongue 2x per day (morning and evening)

Contraindications - can this medicine be  taken with other medicines?

There is no possibility of harmful reactions if TYPO200 is taken with the antibiotics normally used to treat typhoid fever.

How safe is this medicine?

Use during pregnancy: TYPO200 can be used for the treatment of typhoid with complete safety during all stages of pregnancy.

Use with children: TYPO200 can be used with complete safety to treat young children.  The dosages specified for treatment of all types of typhoid should also be used for children.  Body weight or physical maturity is not a factor for dosing with homoeopathic medicines.

Overdose & Toxicity: There is no possibility of overdoses or toxic effects with TYPO200, or any other homoeopathic medicines.  TYPO200 works on the immune system at the molecular level and stimulates the immune system and the liver.  No chemical or toxic actions are used as part of the medicine’s mode of action.

Side effects: TYPO200 does not cause side effects.  Other medicines can also be taken with TYPO200 without risk of contraindications.

Are there any precautions regarding the use of this medicine?

TYPO200 like other homoeopathic medicines is very sensitive.  Patients using this medicine must observe the following prohibitions:

1.   Do not smoke at least 20 minutes before taking the medicine.  For heavy smokers a cup of coffee can neutralise strong nicotine residue.

2.   Do not brush your teeth with toothpaste at least 20 minutes before using the medicine.

3.   Do not eat peppermints or strong tasting sweets at least 20 minutes before using the medicine.

4.   Do not eat strongly spiced food at least 20 minutes before using the medicine.

5.      The bottle should not be left in strong direct sunlight or in hot places above 35 Celsius.

6.      The bottle must never be opened.  If the contents are transferred to another container, exposed to strong odours or come in contact with a non-sterile object the medicine will be destroyed.

7.      The bottle must not be exposed to X-rays.  If travelling by plane wrap the bottle in aluminium foil or simply carry it so that it is not X-rayed with the cabin baggage.

If in doubt about oral cleanliness rinse the mouth with fresh water before using the medicine.
